Angel’s Heap
Neil Finn/Tim Finn
News travels fast
There’s an old wreck in the underpass
Wine in a glass
And a well travelled bed
Down the length and breadth of the motorway
Down the information highway
I took a ride
In an angel’s heap
Yeah I took a ride
And she took me away
To where the hills are steep
Yeah I took a ride
In the still mind of a child
There’s a live bird on her shoulder
She could swallow a lie
Like she’s drinking a flagon of beer
I’ll never be the same again
Let the black wheels fly over
I took a ride
In an angel’s heap
And she took me away
To where the air was sweet
And she made me come alive
In a red vinyl seat
Yeah I took a ride
Let the black wheels fly over
“It was based on a painting by Jenny Watson. I bought this painting years ago. It’s a very enigmatic painting of a woman in a black dress sitting on the top of an old rusty car in the middle of an Australian field, dry grass everywhere, a couple of black bottles - don’t know what they once contained. A pussycat, Humpty Dumpty - full of symbols and things that probably mean a lot to her. But the name of it was Angel’s Heap, and so we shamelessly lifted it.”
“This song is dedicated to all the babysitters in the world.”
The rear cover of the Finn CD booklet shows the recording session for Angel’s Heap. Neil and Tim are ether side of the Neumann KU 100 Dummy Head Microphone. This binaural stereo microphone provides a 3D sound when listening on headphones.
