You Can Touch
Neil Finn
It could spell my near defeat
You could find it’s what you need
And tears will fall and oceans will rise
I feel the fear and I know I’m alive
And you can touch me I won’t hide
You can touch me I won’t die
My condition is hard to define
I’m thin and pale and I need to unwind
I see no future from where I stand
For the present I am in your hands
And you can touch me I won’t hide
You can touch me I won’t die
And tears will fall and oceans will rise
I feel the fear and I know I’m alive
We’re only passing through
And you can touch me I won’t hide
You can touch me I won’t die
You can touch me I won’t die
Spanish promo CD, 1999
“You Can Touch was from the Together Alone sessions. It was a song that we were recording late one night at Karekare when Paul Hester, who was being frustrated by not being able to get this drum beat I was suggesting, went off in a huff, threw a tantrum and went back home to the other house we were living in.
I was a bit stubborn and decided that I could do the drums myself and proceeded to record five tracks of mono drums, which I thought sounded pretty good. The opening fill to this day sounds very exciting to my ears but unfortunately, Bob Clearmountain, who mixed the album, didn’t really agree. In fact I remember him coming in to see me halfway through the mix of this one and saying, ‘Neil, I really like your voice, I really like your guitar playing and your songs but I can’t mix your drums.’”
You can hear Paul’s overdubbed drums come in at 3’06”.
